Understand each date source
datePublished and dateModified in relevant structured data are explicit editorial claims. An HTML time element makes a date visible and machine-readable. Article Open Graph properties provide another publishing signal. Last-Modified and ETag primarily support HTTP validation and may change because a template or deployment changed rather than because the article was substantively revised.
The checker reports these sources separately and flags broad disagreement. It does not inspect editorial history, determine whether a rewrite was meaningful, or claim that a newer date improves ranking. Those conclusions require evidence beyond public markup.
- Use valid ISO dates in structured data.
- Show the same relevant date to readers with a time element.
- Update dateModified only after meaningful editorial changes.
- Keep template deployments from rewriting article dates automatically.
