A page can expose several dates that describe different events. Editorial metadata, visible dates, deployment headers, and cache validators should not be collapsed into one unsupported claim that the content is fresh.

Understand each date source

datePublished and dateModified in relevant structured data are explicit editorial claims. An HTML time element makes a date visible and machine-readable. Article Open Graph properties provide another publishing signal. Last-Modified and ETag primarily support HTTP validation and may change because a template or deployment changed rather than because the article was substantively revised.

The checker reports these sources separately and flags broad disagreement. It does not inspect editorial history, determine whether a rewrite was meaningful, or claim that a newer date improves ranking. Those conclusions require evidence beyond public markup.

  • Use valid ISO dates in structured data.
  • Show the same relevant date to readers with a time element.
  • Update dateModified only after meaningful editorial changes.
  • Keep template deployments from rewriting article dates automatically.

Create a repeatable refresh process

Review pages when facts, product capabilities, pricing, regulations, screenshots, or cited sources change. Keep a short change log internally, revise the content, verify links and claims, then update the editorial date signals together. Re-run this checker after publishing to confirm the public response is consistent.

Freshness is not a substitute for usefulness. A recent timestamp on unchanged copy is weaker than a properly maintained page with clear sourcing, direct answers, and accurate structured data.
