How it works

Video Trimmer & Cutter: methodology and worked example

How this tool computes its result

The trimmer loads a browser-playable video locally, reads its duration and intrinsic frame size, and lets you choose one continuous keep range with start and end controls. During export, browser-only FFmpeg re-encodes the selected interval without uploading the source. The result is a new clip containing only the chosen interval; the frame is not resized, cropped, or fitted to a different aspect ratio. You can keep the source container or choose MP4, MOV, or WebM.

Worked example

A 2-minute screen recording with a 12-second intro can be trimmed by setting Start to 00:12 and End to 01:48. The exported video is 96 seconds long, keeps the source width and height, and contains the continuous section between those timestamps. If you need to remove a mistake from the middle while keeping the material before and after it, export the two keeper sections separately and join them with a video merger rather than assuming a single in/out range can create a discontinuous edit.

When not to use this tool

Use a timeline editor or a server-side FFmpeg workflow when you need to remove several middle sections, make frame-accurate cuts across many clips, preserve the original streams without re-encoding, or process very large files in batches. This browser video cutter re-encodes locally, so export time is tied to the selected duration and browser resources.

Common mistakes

  • - Confusing trimming with cropping. Trimming changes the timeline; it does not change the video frame or aspect ratio.
  • - Expecting the tool to remove a middle section in one pass. The current workflow exports one continuous start-to-end selection.
  • - Closing or backgrounding the tab during a long export. Browser playback capture must keep running until the selected clip finishes.
