How it works

Title Tag Optimizer: methodology and worked example

How this tool computes its result

Scores a title 0-100 starting from 100 and applying fixed penalties: -25 if under 30 characters, -20 if over 60 (which also auto-truncates the "optimized" output at the last word boundary before 60 chars, or hard-cuts to 57 chars plus "..." if no space is found past character 30), -30 if the primary keyword is not found as a case-insensitive substring, -10 if the title contains any of < > " ' (which are then stripped from the optimized output), and -15 if the entire title is all-caps. Separately, up to 8 non-scoring suggestion strings are generated for keyword position, brand-name presence, numbers, and "power words" (best, ultimate, complete, guide, free, top, how to, why) -- these appear as text regardless of whether they move the score.

Worked example

Entering the title "SEO TOOLS FOR MARKETERS COMPARISON GUIDE 2026" (47 characters, all caps) with keyword "SEO tools": length is 30-60 so no length penalty, the keyword is found so no keyword penalty, there are no special characters, but the all-caps check fires -15, landing the score at 85. The "optimized" output text itself is NOT converted to title case by this penalty -- only the score drops; "Convert to title case for better readability" is shown as separate advice, not applied automatically.

When not to use this tool

The keyword match is a plain case-insensitive substring check with no stemming or synonym awareness, so a keyword like "SEO tool" will not match a title containing "SEO tools" (plural) and gets scored as if the keyword were completely absent, a -30 penalty.

Common mistakes

  • - Assuming a high score means the title is publish-ready as shown -- the "optimized" string is only actually rewritten in two cases (over-length truncation and special-character stripping); the all-caps and keyword-position issues are reported as text only, never auto-fixed.
  • - Typing a keyword that is a near-miss of what appears in the title (different pluralization, hyphenation, or word order) -- the check is an exact case-insensitive substring match, so "AI-visibility" as a keyword will not match "AI visibility" in the title.
  • - Not noticing generation is blocked entirely until both title and keyword are filled in -- leaving either blank keeps the Optimize button disabled with no partial score shown.
