Compare platform limits

Select a platform for the detailed count, or scan every limit below.

Platform limits can change and some surfaces use different limits. This tool labels the content type being checked; X uses a practical 23-character URL estimate, so its count is intentionally an estimate rather than an official API calculation.

How it works

Social Media Character Counter: methodology and worked example

How this tool computes its result

The counter measures the text directly in your browser and reports characters, words, sentences, and lines. It then applies each platform rule to the same text: X uses a practical 23-character estimate for each URL, while the other platform cards use ordinary Unicode-aware character counts against their labeled post, caption, description, or title limit. The result is a live remaining/over-limit status and progress bar for every supported platform, with no text upload or account connection.

Worked example

Paste a 300-character launch post and select X. The tool shows 300 regular characters against X’s 280-character post limit and marks the post 20 characters over. Select Instagram and the same copy is comfortably below the 2,200-character caption limit. If the copy contains https://example.com/a-long-page, the X card treats that URL as an estimated 23 characters, which is closer to how X counts links than using the raw URL length.

When not to use this tool

Platform policies and limits change, and a character limit does not tell you how much of a post appears before a “more” fold or how the copy will perform. Treat the counts as a publishing check, not a guarantee of reach, engagement, or visual fit. YouTube has separate title and description limits, so choose the matching content type when checking a video asset.

Common mistakes

  • - Confusing character count with word count. Spaces, punctuation, emoji, and line breaks can all change the space a post consumes.
  • - Treating every platform as if it uses the same content type. A YouTube description, YouTube title, Instagram caption, and social bio have different limits.
  • - Assuming the X URL estimate is an official API result. The tool intentionally labels it as an estimate because URL and Unicode accounting can change.
