How it works

Image Alt Text Generator: methodology and worked example

How this tool computes its result

Takes three inputs - subject (what is in the image), context (where it appears on the page), and optional keyword (target term) - and applies one of three template sets (concise, descriptive, commerce) to generate three alt-text suggestions. Each suggestion is truncated to 125 characters max with "..." suffix if it exceeds the limit. Concise templates omit "Image of" phrasing; descriptive templates add "Image of" and emphasize purpose; commerce templates frame as product-focused. Best practices are displayed as hardcoded guidance (keep 80-125 chars, describe what is in the image, avoid keyword stuffing).

Worked example

Subject "dashboard showing AI visibility trends," context "feature page hero section," keyword "AI visibility tracking," style "descriptive": generates suggestions like "Image of dashboard showing AI visibility trends used in feature page hero section," "Dashboard showing AI visibility trends illustrating AI visibility tracking for feature page hero section," etc. Each is checked against the 125-character limit and truncated if needed.

When not to use this tool

This generates template-based suggestions - it does not analyze your actual image file, does not check whether alt text matches the visual content, and does not validate that your keyword choice is relevant to the image; treat the output as a starting point, not final alt text.

Common mistakes

  • - Leaving the keyword field blank and expecting "keyword stuffing" to be avoided - the tool still generates suggestions without it, but the commerce and descriptive templates will use filler text ("main features," "the page topic") instead of your actual target keyword.
  • - Assuming all three suggestions are equally good - suggestions are just template variations; one may be a better fit than others depending on whether the image is decorative, content-critical, or product-focused.
  • - Pasting a full sentence in the subject field and watching suggestions balloon to 150+ characters before truncation - truncation is aggressive (cuts at 122 chars + "..."), so verbose subjects get clipped; use concise subject phrasing for best results.
