How it works

PDF SEO Metadata Checker: methodology and worked example

How this tool computes its result

The audit reads standard PDF information fields and XMP metadata where available, including title, author, subject, keywords, language, creator, producer, creation date, and modification date. It also evaluates whether the filename is descriptive, counts pages and link annotations, records file size, and verifies that meaningful text can be extracted. The metadata score is the percentage of seven transparent checks that pass: title, author, subject, keywords, language, descriptive filename, and complete meaningful text coverage.

Worked example

A report named final-document-3.pdf contains 18 searchable pages and a title, author, and subject, but has no language, keywords, or descriptive filename. The audit passes text indexability and the three populated fields, flags the missing values, and identifies the filename as weak. Renaming the file to ai-shopping-visibility-report-2026.pdf and adding accurate language and subject metadata improves the file-level audit without pretending that those changes alone will create rankings.

When not to use this tool

Do not treat PDF metadata as a replacement for crawlable hosting, internal links, helpful content, canonical strategy, or HTML landing pages. Google can derive or rewrite a PDF title from content and links. The tool cannot inspect server headers, robots rules, index status, backlinks, duplicate copies, or the search intent that led to the document.

Common mistakes

  • - Stuffing the keywords field with repeated phrases. Metadata should describe the document accurately, not imitate obsolete keyword tactics.
  • - Uploading an optimized PDF without linking to it from a crawlable, relevant HTML page.
  • - Using a generic filename such as document.pdf or final-v7.pdf and expecting metadata alone to provide clear URL context.
