How it works

Email Open Rate Calculator: methodology and worked example

How this tool computes its result

Computes openRate, clickThroughRate, and conversionRate as percentages of Delivered emails (not Sent), clickToOpenRate as a percentage of Opened, and bounceRate as a percentage of Sent. If 'Delivered' is left blank, it defaults to the Sent count, meaning bounces are effectively ignored in every rate that's supposed to be measured against successful deliveries. Open rate and click-through rate are jointly compared against three benchmark tiers (excellent: 25%/5%, good: 20%/3%, average: 15%/2%) — a campaign only earns a tier if BOTH metrics clear that tier's thresholds — driving a rules-based recommendation list plus optional revenue-per-email/open/click figures when a revenue figure is supplied.

Worked example

Sent=10000, Delivered left blank (defaults to 10000), Opened=2000, Clicked=500, Converted=50, Bounced=100, Unsubscribed=25, Revenue=5000. openRate = 2000/10000*100 = 20%, clickThroughRate = 500/10000*100 = 5%, clickToOpenRate = 500/2000*100 = 25%, conversionRate = 50/10000*100 = 0.5%, bounceRate = 100/10000*100 = 1%. Status becomes 'good' (openRate 20 >= good's 20 AND CTR 5 >= good's 3, but openRate 20 does not clear excellent's 25 threshold). revenuePerEmail = 5000/10000 = $0.50.

When not to use this tool

The status label requires BOTH open rate and click-through rate to clear the same tier simultaneously — a campaign with an outstanding 30% open rate but only a 1% click rate gets bucketed all the way down to 'needsImprovement', which can understate genuinely strong subject-line performance.

Common mistakes

  • - Leaving 'Delivered' blank expecting it to differ from 'Sent' automatically — the calculator falls back to the sent count exactly, so bounce impact is silently excluded from every rate computed against delivered volume.
  • - Reading 'Conversion Rate' as a percentage of clicks — it's computed against delivered emails, not clicks, so it will read much lower than a typical 'clicks-to-conversion' figure from other tools.
  • - Entering a revenue figure with zero opens or clicks recorded — revenuePerOpen and revenuePerClick are only computed when opened/clicked are non-zero and are simply omitted from the report otherwise.
